Abstract

The article presents information on the book "The Ideals of Indian Art," by E.B. Havell. It states that until very recent years there has been virtually no study of any of the Indian fine arts, except architecture, that has evinced real sympathy with its subject. The symbolism of Indian art is repeatedly considered by Havell, particularly for Brahma, Vishnu, and Ganesha. Havell is correct in saying that in the initial period of the so-called "early Buddhist" art "the prevailing influence is not the idealism of Aryan thought, but the naturalism of the non-Aryan races which were converted to Buddhism," among tile elements of this art being the Central and East Asian and the Helleno-Persian.
