Abstract

Among messages brought by Islam is to guide people to be able to choose between issues which are right and wrong, including halal and haram on food consumed. Food is the primary need of every human being. However, any food to be consumed should be in safe condition and does not harm the health. Based on Islamic perspective, safe food is the halal substance, how to process and slaughter, and how to get. As a predominantly Muslim country, the government of Indonesia is responsible for maintaining halal food products. This has been stated in Surah al-Maidah verse 88, al-Mu'minun verse 51, al- Baqarah verse 172, 168 and various sayings (hadis) of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Halal product is important and has become a trend and grow into the market needs. It affects and changes the symbol of quality assurance and lifestyle choices. This paper aims to show that Islam is very particular in terms of consuming good and hygienic food (Halalan Thayyiban). Among the findings of the paper are it shows that Islamic religion's instruction has never been different from any medical theories. Allah SWT has explained the virtues due to consuming the lawful (halal) and warned those who consume the unlawful (haram). To ensure that the product is halal, it is necessary for the government to be involved in enforcing the producers of preparing or making foods, managing markets, and conducting a series of halal tests, in order to get the halal certificate before selling the products. In Indonesia, there are stages to get halal certificate, among others: the submission of an application to LPPOM-MUI, auditing the documents, reviewing the location, and receiving result of the application.
