Abstract

The article presents information related to several books. Never was the reproach of inconsistency more unjustly leveled at a public man than at the statesman Carl Schurz. Again and again the note of true consistency in political life rings in Schurz's public utterances. Schurz's amiable personal characteristics, unconsciously revealed in his book "Reminiscences," live in the memory of those who knew him best. Meredith Nicholson has written the book "Otherwise Phyllis." In this book the narrative proper begins at the moment when the protagonist Phyllis emerges from girlhood into womanhood. In the book entitled "Unpath'd Waters," by Frank Harris, the suggestion of the title is borne out by a certain oddity in the tales and sketches.
