Abstract

The article presents an overview of the October 22, 1914 issue of "The Nation." The chief duty of Americans, while the war in Europe is going on, has been many times said to be that of observing strict neutrality. In a public way, and officially, this may be true. But so far as the attitude of private citizens is concerned; there are other duties which come first. One of these is to preserve the American intellectual integrity; to form American judgments on the basis of ascertained fact and reasonable probability; not to take rumor for proof; and, in general, to keep American heads at a time when it is so easy to let them be blown off the shoulders.
