Abstract

This article reports on several incidents of heinous crimes committed by whites in the name of protecting Southern womanhood. From a study of authenticated cases it seems that where there is a white man to be shielded from the consequences of wrongdoing, where a Negro is a rival in trade or business of white men, where a Negro attempts to change his statue from that of laborer to property owner and farmer or where a Negro falls under suspicion of attempting to exercise the functions of a citizen guaranteed him by the Federal Constitution, there stares him in the face the danger that he will be done to death in any one of a number of hideous ways by a mob of white men intent upon "protecting Southern womanhood."
