Abstract

A nested Cu<subscript>24</subscript>@Cu<subscript>72</subscript> copper–organic framework, [Cu<subscript>5</subscript>(bdc)<subscript>4</subscript>(ina)<subscript>2</subscript>(H<subscript>2</subscript>O)<subscript>3</subscript>]·solvent (1, H<subscript>2</subscript>bdc = 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid and Hina = isonicotinic acid) based on paddlewheel Cu<subscript>2</subscript>(COO)<subscript>4</subscript> SBUs, has been synthesized. There are three types of cages with different sizes and shapes: Cu<subscript>24</subscript>-cage, Cu<subscript>60</subscript>-cage and Cu<subscript>72</subscript>-cage. The Cu<subscript>72</subscript>-cage, which is the highest-nuclearity Cu-cage reported to date, encapsulates a Cu<subscript>24</subscript>-cage to form a double-walled Cu<subscript>24</subscript>@Cu<subscript>72</subscript> cage-within-cage structure. Dye adsorption studies reveal that compound 1 can rapidly and selectively adsorb cationic dyes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
