Abstract

The article presents an overview of the book "The Canoe and the Saddle," by Theodore Winthrop. It was edited and issued by John H. Williams. of Tacoma, Washington. It was there stated that the editor "has connected Winthrop's narrative with authentic history of the regions traversed, and has scattered through the book, in footnotes and in illustrations not formerly used in this connection, many interesting cross-references" It was further stated that "Williams's edition is often careless in matters of detail," and some of these errors were pointed out. In reply to this review Williams sent a letter for publication, in which he charged the reviewer with knowing "nothing of Winthrop's book," and argued the reputed errors at great length.
