Abstract
- In the article, the author focuses on the cost and standard of living, and plight of the poor in the U.S. All the wonderful things they see or of which they hear are apparently not for them. They have no material, constructive sense. They are not quick at figures, nor are they clever with their hands. They can only think and write, in a way. They see the vast institutions, filled to overflowing, apparently, with the financially interested and capable, but they have not the least idea how to do likewise. They have never earned more than thirty-five dollars a week.
