Abstract

Soviet Union, which the Western world used to know through literature and travelers' tales, seemed profoundly religious. The wisdom of the devout and trusting "fool" was always coming out in Russian stories to confound the shallow eloquence of the sophisticated. The Slav's contribution to Western civilization was to be spiritual; that Soviet Union would lead a world obsessed by machinery and "works" of all sorts hack to simple faith. One could scarcely think of Soviet Union, in the hullabaloo of London, England, or New York, without seeing the clustered domes of Russian churches sprouting toward the sky and multitudes bowing and crossing themselves, and without hearing the diapason of mighty choruses and bells.
