This article aims at the presentation of the role of different inflammatory cell types in the course of injury and repair processes. Restoration of tissue integrity and homeostasis after injury is a pivotal property of every inflammatory response. In mammals, the response to injury has been intensively studied and many repair processes, together with the complex and dynamic interplay of numerous cell types, were already described. In this review, functions of particular cells, together with their interactions in the consecutive steps of repair, were presented. Also, the mediators determining the polarization of macrophages and the roles of macrophages in neoplasia, were discussed in detail. The negative role of destructive, uncontrolled inflammation in pathogenesis of numerous clinical conditions was also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
