Abstract
- Shanghai, the great commercial metropolis of the Far East, suppresses all free speech on the subject which matters most to the mass of its citizenry—their ability to make a decent living for themselves and their families. Working conditions are notoriously bad, as the Shanghai Child Labor Commission Report of two years ago revealed. An exhaustive investigation made this year under the direction of the industrial department of the National YMCA Committee of China shows that there has been little, if any improvement. The wages of the overwhelming majority of the 450,000 persons engaged in this city in industry and transportation are below $12 a month.
