Abstract

This article presents information about the book "Girls and Their Wishes," by W.I. Thomas. Civilized societies, says Thomas, have endowed the young girl with a character of social sacredness. The book begins with an account of the four sorts of wishes that govern the human heart: the wish for change and adventure, the wish for security, the wish to be favorably thought of, and the hunger to spend and receive affection. To this the author has added an appreciation of community control, including gossip as a constructive element, and a chapter on individual rebellion against such control, with an account of how it is increasing.
