Abstract

It would be illuminating to know how large a percentage of New York's population dwells below the level or sidewalks. It is this submerged tenth that Bosworth Crocker draws upon in the book "Humble Folk," for material inner one-act plays. Of the five plays in the collection, two have scenes laid below the pavement level and the other three command a view of life equally narrow and similarly depressing. It is as if her characters, staring out through dingy barred windows, have only the horizon of the curbstone across the street for their dreams.
