Abstract

The crystal structures of salts (C<subscript>18</subscript>H<subscript>22</subscript>N<subscript>3</subscript>)(NO<subscript>3</subscript>) (I) and (C<subscript>8</subscript>H<subscript>24</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript>)[ZnCl<subscript>4</subscript>]Cl<subscript>2</subscript>(II), based on protonated polyamines (diethylenetriamine and N,N′-bis(2-aminoethyl)piperazine) are studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Salt I exhibits a wave-like 1D chain formed by N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds from monoprotonated (C<subscript>18</subscript>H<subscript>22</subscript>N<subscript>3</subscript>)<superscript>+</superscript> cations and NO<subscript>3</subscript><superscript>−</superscript> anions. In salt II, multi-protonated N,N′-bis(2-aminoethyl)piperazinium ions are connected into two types of infinite subloop chains through N-H⋯Cl and C-H⋯Cl halogen bonding contacts from (C<subscript>8</subscript>H<subscript>24</subscript>N<subscript>4</subscript>)<superscript>4+</superscript> cations and [ZnCl<subscript>4</subscript>]<superscript>2−</superscript> and Cl<superscript>−</superscript> anions. The analysis of the Hirshfeld surfaces shows the intermolecular interactions involved in the crystal structures. The corresponding quantitative information is presented by fingerprint plots.
