The Show Business: I. The Crisis in the Theater.

The article presents an overview of the situation of theaters in New York City. A glance at the newspaper any time during the summer just past would, however, have revealed the startling fact that only six or seven of the seventy theaters were actually in operation and there were periods during what should have been the height of last winter's season when thirty or forty playhouses were either dark or given over to vaudeville, burlesque, or moving-picture entertainments.
