Abstract

The article discusses progress in the social sciences in the century between 1750 and 1850. It discusses the emergence of Common Law, municipal law, international law and moral philosophy from the old doctrine of natural law, which itself became absorbed in theology and evolved into a separate discipline. It talks about the transformation of moral philosophy into moral science and of philosophy of history into the history of civilization during the 19th century. It also discusses the growth of historical writing and the evaluation of the historical method.
