Abstract
- The paper focuses on the beginnings of Jaroslav Durych's journalism, i.e., on articles published between 1918 and 1922. In these articles, Durych presented his engaged attitude after the birth of the Czechoslovak Republic, as he viewed the time as a historical moment, in which he was searching for an epochal magnificence or perhaps for an ideal and the meaning of history. At the same time he was, of course, advocating the right of Catholic and spiritual literature to have its place within the public domain. Catholic literature indeed did eventually and paradoxically become one of the artistic strands of the First Republic period. Durych's early journalism shows that his desire for an epochal magnificence constituted an autonomous component of his own thinking and did not emerge only from his confrontation with the contemporary anti-Catholic climate which emerged after the birth of the Republic. In the paper, Durych's interpretation of Czech history and his visions concerning the First Republic are treated in greater detail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
