Synthesis and structural variety of first Mn and Bi selenites and selenite chlorides.

Abstract
- Single crystals of new Mn<subscript>2</subscript>[Bi<subscript>2</subscript>O](SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>4</subscript> (I), MnBi(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>Cl (II), Mn<superscript>II</superscript>Mn<superscript>III</superscript>(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>Cl (III), Mn<subscript>5</subscript>(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>Cl<subscript>6</subscript> (IV), and Mn<subscript>4</subscript>(Mn<subscript>5</subscript>,Bi)(SeO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>8</subscript>Cl<subscript>5</subscript> (V) have been synthesized by chemical vapour transport and hydrothermal methods. They have been structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The compounds II–V are the first Mn selenite chlorides, while the I, II and V compounds are the first Bi-containing Mn oxoselenites. Structural relationships of the new phases with other compounds are discussed. An overview of the mixed-ligand MnO<subscript>m</subscript>Cl<subscript>n</subscript> polyhedra in inorganic compounds is given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
