This contribution intends to present, in the form that will appear merely list-like, the main lines of research that has marked the development of biology, and in particular the neurobiological studies in Italy, from the last decade of the XIX century to more than half of the XX century. Those who are already familiar with the life and work of Giuseppe Levi, will notice that this text is inevitably indebted to two distinguished and unforgettable pupils of Giuseppe Levi, Proff. O. M.
