Abstract

Evidences of mass starvation have been plentiful from French Indo-China, all the way up the line, and the people reaching the coast from farther inland say the situation there is even worse. They agree that UNRRA has helped, but insist it has never had large enough supplies to be more than a token blessing. In Haiphong, Vietnam, thirty-seven natives had dropped dead in the main part of the town during the previous night, a new low for the week. It was cholera that usually struck the final blow, he explained, but in almost every case the dead man had been so weakened by malnutrition over a long period that it was merely a matter of chance which disease shoved him over the brink.
