Abstract

The article focuses on the book "The Middle of the Journey," by Lionel Trilling. the book presents information about the political commitment of intellectuals. The chief protagonist, John Laskell, the liberal, crossing the perilous Dantean decade in which risks, doubts and challenges of a man's life declare themselves and his personality first begins to contract into limitations and decisions to which it is fated. He is a fortunate young man of the middle class who has disciplined his privileges by an earnest if skeptical liberal faith. He has become, after earlier creative leanings, an authority on housing, so justifying in his own mind the social bearings of his political sympathies.
