Abstract

This article informs about the Committee for Economic Development which is the youngest, the best publicized, and the most evangelical of the national organizations devoted to the advancement of private enterprise. Unlike the National Association of Manufacturers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, it does not carry on offensive and defensive lobbying in Congress. The report of this committee, published on October 11, 1945, under the title "Toward More Jobs and More Freedom," is an important document. The most striking section of the report is that devoted to the "crucial responsibilities" of government "for promoting and maintaining high levels of productive employment." In the fiscal and monetary fields, it declares, government exerts a major influence on the stability of demand.
