Abstract

The behavior of local economies during the economic crisis is one of the greatest concerns in the scientific world. The study aims to highlight the patterns of evolution of local economies from Romania, which have a spa tourism function (officially in 2016 there were attested more than 30 territorial systems with spa tourism functionality), for the period 2009-2016, a period marked by a decline for most local economies. In the present paper we intend to quantify how spa tourism contributes to increase the adaptive capacity of local economies with spa tourism function. The research is based on a set of indicators considered relevant (total number of firms, total number of employees, turnover and total profit) for all spa resorts from Romania for the period 2000-2016, defining the period 2009-2016, when the economic crisis took place in Romania. Research has revealed different levels of adaptability to the structural crisis, noting the territorial systems with touristic function with superior functional complexity, where the adaptive capacity is clearly superior.
