Abstract

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to develop a method for assessing speech- language pathology author impact as a function of institution and to compare these results to a recent college ranking of speech-language pathology graduate programs. Method: Scopus author impact metrics (i.e., number of documents, number of citations, h index, and coauthors) were generated for 254 accredited graduate programs in speech- language pathology in the United States and Canada. Summed author impact metrics were generated to represent the total institution output, whereas median values were generated to represent a measure of central tendency of individual speech-language pathology faculty performance. Results: A total of 1,532 speech-language pathology faculty members were identified, and 83.2% were located in Scopus. All metrics were positively skewed. All total summed and median impact metrics were positively correlated with the total number of speech-language pathology faculty in the institutions and with the summed number of coauthors (p < .001). Total summed and median impact metrics were higher for research/doctoral versus nonresearch universities (p < .001). Scopus impact metrics were significantly correlated with college program rankings. Conclusions: These metrics may be used in part for attracting prospective students and speech-language pathology faculty and allocating institutional funding and as a standard for institutional production.
