Abstract

This Geneva Conference has been the worst shock to the German people, both the 50,000,000 of the Federal Republic and the 18,000,000 of Communist East Germany, since the end of the war. A bare three weeks ago German hopes were set high. Chancellor Konrad Adenauer had returned from Moscow less than a month before with the promise that the German prisoners would be sent home from the Soviet Union. In return, direct diplomatic relations would be opened between Bonn and Moscow, giving the federal government a material chance of doing something to secure German reunification.
