Abstract
- The British general election was at bottom, a contest between two liberal parties, one of which had the great advantage of holding power. It was little wonder, then, that the Tories came back, a swing of less than 2 percent of the vote giving them a margin of 59 seats in the new Parliament. Little wonder, either, that the official Liberal Party, which put up 110 candidates in an earnest attempt to stage a comeback, won only five seats. Middle-of-the-road voters could rally behind either Conservative party or Labor position and feel comfortable whatever the outcome.
