Abstract

This is the story of John Henry Faulk, a professional front-porch philosopher who one day decided to put the homespun virtues lie talked about into action. The results, of course, were catastrophic. It cost him, not only his job, but the opportunity to practice his profession on radio and television. It lost him the expense of a battle in the courts that has--been going on since June, 1956, and will probably not be brought to trial for another year. It left him, so to speak, barefoot in Athens, with a lifetime supply of that rare and unsalable commodity, self-respect. John Henry Faulk is a Texan by birth and by nature, and before the Second World War was employed as a teacher of English and a student of folklore at the University of Texas.
