Abstract

In February 1950, the Vatican city announced that it had accepted with regret the resignation of Monsignor Joseph Charbonneau, Archbishop of Montreal, Quebec for reasons of health. Quebec has buzzed with rumor and speculation ever since. The comments of the English papers made Catholic spokesmen furious, since they implied that the future attitude of the church in Quebec would be anti-labor, a dangerous position. The Archbishop had come out boldly for the Catholic syndicates fighting the American Johns-Manville Co. saying that when there is a conspiracy to destroy the working class, the church must intervene.
