Abstract

British opposition to mass higher education runs deep. Last September, Lord Todd, the Nobel laureate who is head of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, spoke out against "the expansion of numbers in Great Britain's universities." Great Britain is now conducting the most ambitious experiment in the techniques of teaching to vast numbers yet attempted. The three-part combination of correspondence packages, radio and TV and face-to-face teaching offered by the Open University is not unique. Four "Foundation Courses" are offered this year-science, social science, mathematics and humanities.
