Abstract

This article discusses a study that ranked finance research productivity among European universities using a set of 15 core finance journals during the 1990s. Academic research in finance contributes to the reputation capital of finance programs, business schools, and universities in various ways. A measurement of research success can be an important input into the monitoring and decision processes within academics that nurtures the reputation capital. Using data collected from a set of 15 core finance journals as the basis for the ranking, the research productivity both in terms of page counts and numbers of articles was measured. The analysis also allows assess to research productivity concentration across institutions. A comparison between European universities and the North American universities was conducted to gauge the relative performance of the European universities. This is the first study that provides several interesting perspectives on research productivity in finance in the European region.
