Abstract
- The article focuses on the present conditions of French cinema. Many of the postwar directors have claimed that the pre-war cinema suffered from provinciality. In the period following the Second World War the French cinema floundered. The German occupation, the heavy burden of genius from a previous epoch, had a stultifying effect. While the French have remained somewhat disjointed in using their own country as an integral part of the film, the best directors in other countries were able to break away from the artificiality of Hollywood by using their proper landscape as part of their themes.
