Abstract

The article focuses on some recent issues in the United States. The Oakland branch of Michigan State University has notified intellectual Samuel Shapiro that it will not renew his contract which, had it been renewed, would have given him full tenure in April 1963. The chancellor, speaking for the university, does not care to discuss the reason for the decision except to say that it was reached "at the administrative level, in a normal, routine, highly professional" manner. In 1948, the U.S. Government created a new industry, domestic uranium mining and processing, and a new way of life for those engaged in it. The infant was tenderly nurtured and it grew fat and strong. Now the problem is to shrink the multi-billion-dollar giant so that it will fit into the military and economic scheme of things; but the giant, apparently, will not be as easy to cut back as it was to build up.
