Abstract
- The article presents information about international politics. The firemen's strike in New York City was absurd; it was also inevitable under the conditions the union faced. The history must be taken into account. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen is no aggregation of hastily organized, downtrodden workers. It was founded in 1873, at the height of the railroad age, and American labor generally owes much to it and the other rail unions. But it has fallen on evil days. The wives often the widows of Americans serving in Vietnam have been receiving in recent months abusive, jeering and threatening phone calls. The incidents have risen into the hundreds, but thus far not a single one of them has been traced, and in the absence of information it is difficult to conceive what sort of diseased personalities are perpetrating them.
