Abstract

The blueprint of the Algeria to come that emerged from the Evian talks is something that, in most French minds, still belongs to a dim and nebulous future. No doubt, the statements made by the French Government concerning the future relations between France and an independent Algeria complete with civil, political, economic, legal and cultural guarantees for the European minority, and the technical, financial and economic cooperation between the two countries look good on paper, but what bothers the man in the Street in France today are the next six months, before an independent Algeria actually becomes a reality; or, rather, the next few weeks, in which it should become clear whether or not the OAS has sufficient strength to sabotage the whole plan.
