Abstract

The Government of China, which has the unenviable task of feeding, clothing and housing the largest population on earth, is in the midst of another massive effort to curb the nation's numbers. But whereas its original birth-control campaign was a crude affair, this new attempt to limit the exploding Chinese population is somewhat more subtle. Five years ago, when the Communist Party led by Chairman Mao Tse-tung was flushed with success, the birth-control propaganda was blunt to an embarrassing degree. Millions of diagrams and posters that left almost nothing to the imagination were plastered on bill-boards in factories, at dam sites and in village squares.
