Abstract

The U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver's has shocked the nation with disclosures of dubious safety standards and scandalous profits prevalent in the drug industry. Yet, when a bill to correct the drug industry's abuses reaches the floor of the U.S. Senate, it will be only a shadow of tile legislation that Kefauver wanted and that the public, according to two and a half years of testimony, badly needs. The thalidpmide drug episode compelled the U.S. President John F. Kennedy at his last news conference to announce that he would take administrative steps to prevent a recurrence. Kennedy promised that he would appoint a Consumer Counsel in the Office of the President to watch over such matters as the price and quality of drugs.
