Abstract

Charles Johnston Hitch was named president-elect of the University of California, Los Angeles in California. It was an ingenious try, but there is little mystery about Hitch, about his selection, or even about why the "mystery man" appellation was thought up. For eight months a Board of Regents subcommittee had searched in vain for a new president to replace Clark Kerr, not a single figure with national standing being willing to accept the post after the way Kerr was fired. On September 19, 1967 meeting at UCLA, the Regents committee decided to give up the hunt and settle for the university's Vice President for Administration, who had come to University Hall in September, 1965, as Vice President for Business and Finance.
