Abstract

The widespread apolitisme, with a kind of indifference arid semi-jocular fatalism is something that has been encouraged by nearly four years of Gaullist rule, under which public opinion has been lying dormant and parliamentary opinion has counted for next to nothing. Even serious papers like "Le Monde," scarcely bother reporting parliamentary debates any more, unless there's really something out of the ordinary: for example, when some weeks ago, no fewer than eighty deputies. The whole implication is that the Secret Army Organization are, after all, patriotic Frenchmen, and at least there can be no doubt that they are good anti-Communists.
