Abstract

The growing drive by blacks to crack the building trades unions has reached a head in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The week before Labor Day saw the city convulsed by five successive days of demonstrations by blacks and counter demonstrations by white construction workers. The issue was sharply and at times violently drawn. The week's confrontations began on Monday, August 25, when about 1,000 Black, and white supporters answered the call of the recently formed "Black Construction Coalition" for a mass demonstration at the new stadium under construction on Pittsburgh's North side. The objective was to shut down construction at the stadium, the U.S. Steel Building, and every other major job in the city until contractors and trade unions agreed to a program for putting more blacks on the jobs.
