Abstract

The United States and continental Europe are engaged in a titanic subsurface economic struggle, primarily over the role of U.S. investment in Europe. The outcome may determine whether Europe can survive as an independent entity. Respective roles of gold and the dollar in the world economy are at the focus of this struggle. Mechanics of the struggle are such that its resolution may be determined in the end, not by nations involved but by individual speculators on both sides of the Atlantic, with potentially disastrous consequences for all.
