Abstract
- The use of new forms of "speech," with the resulting strains and difficulties, is but symptomatic of a profound underlying problem. In the U.S. today, an individual with something to say is largely free to mount a soapbox, print and distribute leaflets, or hire a hall. If he is lucky, he will attract a few listeners or readers, but he will probably be unable to reach any substantial segment of the public. This is an age of mass communications media, the chief avenues of which are the newspapers, broadcasting, magazines and books.
