<italic>Hymenobacter terrigena</italic> sp. nov., isolated from soil.

Abstract
- A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, rodshaped, aerobic bacterial strain, designated S1-2-2-5<superscript>T</superscript>, was isolated from the Jeollabuk-do province, Republic of Korea, and was characterized taxonomically using a polyphasic approach. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain S1-2-2-5<superscript>T</superscript> belonged to the family <italic>Cytophagaceae</italic> in phylum <italic>Bacteroidetes</italic>, and was most closely related to <italic>Hymenobacter terrae</italic> DG7A<superscript>T</superscript> (98.2%), <italic>Hymenobacter rubidus</italic> DG7B<superscript>T</superscript> (98.0%), <italic>Hymenobacter soli</italic> PB17<superscript>T</superscript> (97.7%), <italic>Hymenobacter daeguensis</italic> 16F3Y-2<superscript>T</superscript> (97.2%) and <italic>Hymenobacter saemangeumensis</italic> GSR0100<superscript>T</superscript> (97.0%). The G + C content of the genomic DNA of strain S1-2-2-5<superscript>T</superscript> was 59.4 mol%. The detection of menaquinone MK-7 as the predominant respiratory quinone, a fatty acid profile with summed feature 3 (C<subscript>16:1</subscript><italic>ω</italic>7<italic>c</italic>/C<subscript>16:1</subscript><italic>ω</italic>6<italic>c</italic>; 32.0%), C<subscript>15:0</subscript> iso (19.0%), and C<subscript>15:0</subscript> anteiso (15.0%) as the major components, and a polar lipid profile with phosphatidylethanolamine as the major component supported the affiliation of strain S1-2-2-5<superscript>T</superscript> to the genus <italic>Hymenobacter</italic>. The DNA-DNA relatedness between strain S1-2-2-5<superscript>T</superscript> and <italic>H. terrae</italic> KCTC 32554<superscript>T</superscript>, <italic>H. rubidus</italic> KCTC 32553<superscript>T</superscript>, <italic>H. soli</italic> KCTC 12607<superscript>T</superscript>, <italic>H. daeguensis</italic> KCTC 52537<superscript>T</superscript>, and <italic>H. saemangeumensis</italic> KACC 16452<superscript>T</superscript> were 49.5, 48.2, 34.1, 28.1, and 31.8% respectively, clearly showing that the isolate is not related to them at the species level. Strain S1-2-2-5<superscript>T</superscript> could be clearly differentiated from its closest neighbors on the basis of its phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic features. Therefore, strain S1-2-2-5<superscript>T</superscript> represents a novel species of the genus <italic>Hymenobacter</italic>, for which the name <italic>Hymenobacter terrigena</italic> sp. nov. is proposed.
