Stable coordination complexes of α-diimines with Nb(v) and Ta(v) halides.

Abstract

Uncommon examples of coordination compounds of high valent transition metals with α-diimines were obtained and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and/or DFT analysis. The 1 : 1 molar reactions of NbF<subscript>5</subscript> with a selection of α-diimines afforded the ionic compounds [NbF<subscript>4</subscript>(DAD<superscript>R</superscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>][NbF<subscript>6</subscript>] (DAD<superscript>R</superscript> = DAD<superscript>Dip</superscript>, 1a; DAD<superscript>Xyl</superscript>, 1b; DAD<superscript>Mes</superscript>, 1c) in 80–90% yields. The addition of DAD<superscript>Dip</superscript> to NbOCl<subscript>3</subscript> gave NbOCl<subscript>3</subscript>(DAD<superscript>Dip</superscript>), 7 (62% yield). [MBr<subscript>4</subscript>(DAD<superscript>Dip</superscript>)][MBr<subscript>6</subscript>] (M = Nb, 7a; M = Ta, 7b) were afforded in moderate yields from MBr<subscript>5</subscript> and DAD<superscript>Dip</superscript>. The reactions of NbCl<subscript>5</subscript> with DAD<superscript>Dip</superscript> and DAD<superscript>Xyl</superscript> proceeded with non-selective activation of the organic substrate affording complex mixtures of products, including the quinoxalinium salt [{2,6-C<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>3</subscript>(CHMe<subscript>2</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>}N(CH)<subscript>2</subscript>NCC(CHMe<subscript>2</subscript>)(CH)<subscript>3</subscript>C][NbCl<subscript>6</subscript>], 2, the Nb(iv) coordination complex NbCl<subscript>4</subscript>(DAD<superscript>Dip</superscript>), 3, the N-(monoprotonated) α-diimine salts [DAD<superscript>Dip</superscript>(H)][MCl<subscript>6</subscript>], 4a–b, and the iminomethyl-imidazolium [(2,6-C<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>3</subscript>Me<subscript>2</subscript>)NCHCHN(2,6-C<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>3</subscript>Me<subscript>2</subscript>)CCHN(2,6-C<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>3</subscript>Me<subscript>2</subscript>)][NbCl<subscript>6</subscript>], 5.
