Abstract

The cultural movement of Renaissance affected profoundly all the accusations of intellectualism. The hallmark of this alternation came with the publication of Nikolaus Copernicus work in 1543 entitled «De revolutionibus orbium coelestium». This work was the formalization of multiannual considerations, of the astronomers of that time, on the existing interpretational theories for our planetary system. The constant search for truth that governs our planetary system, remained irreducible throughout the course of the 16th century, until the invention of the first telescope by Galileo in the early 17th century. The cultural movement of Renaissance which started from Italy and slowly spread across Europe it influenced also the region of Bohemia. Inevitably Bohemia's local architecture was usually associated with the Renaissance style. Bonifaz Wolmut's miscellaneous architectural work in the Czech lands reflects this influence. Architecture as one of the classical arts, did not arise independently, rather it always reflected the intertwining of the spiritual values of the age, the development of society, technological scientific progress, knowledge and experience, arts and crafts skills. Οn the basis of this formulation but also on the fact that architecture has a content that goes beyond mere forms and functions the pursuit is, apart from the labeling of schematic and stylistic motifs in Bonifaz Wolmut's work which suggest direct influences from the field of astronomy, to emerge further ascertainments on his work which will enhance the indications on the impact of the evolution of the science of astronomy on the architectural thought and practice in the Czech lands during Renaissance period. Such ascertainments are sought through the review of the astronomical orientation of buildings listed on his name. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
