Abstract

Creativity has become increasingly useful in a twenty-first century world in which career flexibility has been identified as an extremely valuable asset. However, the New York State common core English Language Arts standards, with respect to the most recent updates, do not include specific standards for creativity, and more specifically, creative writing. In this paper, I will consider whether the current standards foster or restrict an environment for creative writing. Because students must be able to adapt and innovate to succeed, creativity is essential in the classroom. As such, schools need to help students develop creative mindsets, and I will argue that there is flexibility in the classroom to enhance creativity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
