Abstract

Teenage pregnancy is a global and Thailand’s problem bearing on social and public health. Teenage mothers developed adverse perinatal complications -such as preterm births, neonatal deaths and delivered low birth weight babies. This paper aimed to present the situation of teenage pregnancy in the area of incidence of teenage pregnancy in Thailand and its effect on neonatal outcomes which included birth weight and exclusive breastfeeding by analyzing data of The Reproductive Health Survey 2006 and 2009 obtained from the National statistical office. The results show that the proportion of teenage pregnancy increased from 22.1% (2006) to 23.0% (2009) of all women of reproductive age 15-49 year. This proportion was found to be high in teenage pregnant women living in non-municipal area, non-educated and lowest socioeconomic. Regarding the effects on neonatal outcomes, newborn babies with low birthweight were mostly found in teen mom group compared to the other age. Interestingly, the rate of breast feeding of at least 6 months was the lowest in the group of 15-17 years old mothers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
