Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between the Catholic Church and finance in the colonial region of New Spain in modern-day Latin America, between 1586 and 1598. The author comments on the economic conditions of the Spanish colonies in the Americas during this period, with a focus on the empire's tax policy. The Bula de la Santa Cruzada, a papal bull that granted indulgences for those who took part in the Crusades, is also examined.
