Abstract

The following article addresses the issue of the craft and the Albanian technical language of masons from the Albanian-Macedonian border area Dibra. These people were known up to the late 19th century in the whole Balkans up to Istanbul. Today they still figure in Albania and Macedonia as a symbol for high quality craft from the building sector. The study shows how technical languages even without long traditions inevitably accompany craft transformation, partly through technological progress and development of materials, but also by state structures. The representation of profession change supports the thesis that in Dibra, due to the state border, there are preserved two limited, nevertheless modern technical languages of construction fields. They serve as dialectal linguistic workshops, being specially marked by the oral transmission of the language. The state border appears to be the most important factor within the technical language reproduction of modernization processes and within the formation of two different varieties. On the one hand, this contribution is based on both historical as well anthropological studies and sources regarding the matter of profession, and on the other hand – it is based on empirically collected data from field (at local level). It arised as a part of the postdoctoral project of the author herself in the years from 2011 to 2013. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
