The article explores the socio-economic condition of indigenous peoples (IPs) in Japan as of January 2014. Topics include the legal framework of IPs, Japan's adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of IPs, and the developments in the social condition of the Ainu. Also discussed are the government's programs to raise public awareness of the Ainu and the kidnapping and rape of a 12-year-old Okinawan girl by American military personnel.
