Abstract

The article offers news briefs about Canada. At the annual meeting of Shaw Communications Inc. in Calgary in late January, investment manager Stephen Jarislowsky criticized the board and management for paying five executives--three of them members of the Shaw family--$14.3 million in bonuses last year. Under Ontario's Waste Diversion Act, "brand owners" (for example, Coca-Cola) and "first importers" (such as a food distributor) must contribute 50% of the province's net recycling costs, pegged at about $62 million annually and expected to as much as double by 2006. While Ontario's new system is supported by many, the program faces a number of criticisms. These include: a complicated formula for calculating fees and determining who is affected, and the fact that brand owners and first importers can ask suppliers (packaging companies, for instance) to voluntarily pay part or all of the fee, putting pressure on their already-tight margins and potentially removing the incentive to use recyclable packaging.
